Book Review: MAKE YOUR SHIFT

When it comes to goal setting, most people are pretty familiar with the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound) method of goal planning. The SMART system of goal setting has helped millions of people achieve their goals. Still millions more have utilized the SMART method and still been unable to accomplish their goals. Author, professor, and business consultant Beverly Flaxington believes the reason for this is that  SMART simply doesn’t go far enough, and has introduced her SHIFT model with her book, MAKE YOUR SHIFT.

Let’s take a look first at the SHIFT acronym:

  • SPECIFY the desired outcome
  • HIGHLIGHT obstacles and categorize
  • IDENTIFY the human factor
  • FIND alternatives
  • TAKE disciplined action

The book is written in two parts. Part 1, the first five chapters, explains in detail the five steps in the SHIFT model. Part 2: Tips and Tools for Greater Effectiveness in Life, is seven chapters of life lessons Flaxington has learned as a coach that work well in conjunction with the SHIFT model to create the kind of life you want to lead.

I really like Flaxington’s writing style. She does a very good job of explaining things in crystal clear detail. I’ve also read one of Flaxington’s other books, Understanding Other People and it has become one of my favorites.

If you’ve had trouble obtaining your goals utilizing the SMART method, making the shift might be just what you need to get to the next level.
